I was busy in Brighton DJ wise way back in 2009

Last night a few beers at the Star following a visit to the Mash Tun where Dan now works after his contract with the Quadrant ended at the weekend previous. Then over to see Chris and Rick and a few spliffs of the ganja listening to Chris's selection of disco grooves from the late seventies and early eighties period.

Whilst at the Evening Satr met Ewan and his friend Vince and we had a convivial and sometimes amusing chat outside the pub.

Luckily with a bit of deviuos subturfuge i made sure i got a night at the Quadrant for next month - Thursday 19th to be exact as Dan said the current propietor will honour all current arrangements.

Anyway for an update on the gig scene here is my next few dates -

This is a very cool live set - Leonard Cohen, Was Not Was, Ken Nordine and Sonny Rollins plus our own Jools Holland - enjoy.

Night Music #119 1989 Leonard Cohen, Sonny Rollins, Ken Nordine, Was (Not Was)

Sunday Night, later named Michelob Presents Night Music, is a late-night television show which aired for two seasons between 1988 and 1990 as a showcase for jazz and eclectic musical artists. It was hosted by Jools Holland and David Sanborn, and featured Marcus Miller as musical director. Guests included acts such as Sonny Rollins, Shinehead, Sister Carol, Sonic Youth, Joe Sample, Slim Gaillard, Pere Ubu, Pharoah Sanders, and many others. In addition, vintage clips of jazz legends like Thelonious Monk, Dave Brubeck, and Billie Holiday were also featured. The show also featured a house band of Omar Hakim (drums), Marcus Miller (bass), Philippe Saisse (keys), David Sanborn (sax), Hiram Bullock (guitar), and Jools Holland (piano). The show often allowed its guests ample time to explain the origins of their sound, meaning of songs, etc. It also provided a national audience for lesser known acts (like Arto Lindsay's band The Ambitious Lovers). Hal Willner was the music coordinator, responsible for the interesting musical mix-and-matching that took place on the show.

i seem to be all keyed up today for my first gig in what seems to be ages. Meanwhile i have two mystery shops to perform in a couple of mobile phone shops today in Hove and Brighton. Perhaps I will be able to pop in and see Julian at Fine Records, although I did not bring any classical CD's to sell or exchange.

Anyway , the mix is ready, and if i need any other track , i can download from You Tube using a nifty piece of software and add it in during the mix.

Some good news now - The Northern Lights have won its battle with the council with some minor adjustments.

Direct from the local Argus newspaper -

MANAGEMENT at a Scandinavian-style cafe-bar is celebrating after coming out on top in a licensing dispute.

Sussex Police wanted to amend the licensing conditions of the Northern Lights in Brighton because it deemed it to be operating more like a pub than a cafe-bar.

But a panel of councillors, who took nearly two hours to come to a decision, agreed with the landlord to keep its licence as it is with a few minor adjustments.

It must now have available seating for 80% of its capacity to help alleviate the issue surrounding "vertical drinking", and the Little East Street venue will have to stop serving alcohol at 1am.

The opening hours remain unchanged, despite opposition calling for them to be slashed to an 11pm closing time.

Paulina Talvernsaari, manager and supervisor of the Northern Lights, said: "This is a win for us.

"Everything is much clearer now (in terms of interpretation) and we can move forward.

"We never wanted to be a pub, and we're happy with the result."

It means my monthly gigs will be safe!
jazzy_dave: (Jazzy D in da house)
It was a great gig at the Northern Lights on Wednesday despite the fact that somebody double booked - since from nine onwards there was a prog rock or prog folk band upstairs and i was Djing downstairs.
In the end i was straining to hear my music until one of the guys wacked up the volume for me.
I played the Midwinter track twice as a punter wanted to hear it again and really loved the song. I get that often, and everyone enjoyed the Farewell Farewell song at the end of the gig.

This may be last NL gig   and, yet,  i hope that the damn bastard council will cancel the revoking of the bar licence.

WTF is Brighton Council up to when they are trying to revoke the licence of the Northern Lights bar.

Here is the petition details -

*...Save our Northern Lights...*

"Northern Lights is an independent Scandinavian bar & restaurant set within a 300 year-old fisherman's cottage in the heart of Brighton. For the past 7 years it has served as the integral hub for the Scandinavian community of Brighton, helping to promote cultural diversity within the city by hosting everything from traditional celebrations found in the Nordic calendar, to providing a menu full of traditional Scandinavian food and drinks. But now it finds itself under threat...

Brighton as with any other city has its problem streets, with trouble prominently found on those streets which house notorious big company chain-bars. Little East Street, home of Northern Lights, is not one of them, yet a look through the council's public register will tell you that at this time Northern Lights is the only venue in the entire city which finds its license under scrutiny.Northern Lights is accused of undermining some of the four key licensing objectives as stated in the governments 2003 licensing act, which are as follows:

1. the prevention of crime and disorder
2. public safety
3. prevention of public nuisance
4. the protection of children from harm

Northern Lights have had to make two police call-outs in seven years of operating. Neither of these are recent, and from speaking to the staff, the general mood now appears to be one of anxiety as they bid to save one of the most unique independent premises our city has to offer.

The main charge being levelled against Northern Lights is that of 'vertical drinking' and of not being 'food led,' apparently leading to the negation of the key licensing objectives. They face having their opening hours scaled back (which would surely only divert more people into the more problematic areas of the city, they won't just decide to stop going out), the use of their outdoor seating area being restricted (apparently related to one noise complaint in all of those years, ***we've heard this before...*** (Think Blind Tiger) or at worst, closure.

This coincides with the decision to trial the pedestrianisation of East Street on weekends, despite the fact that a long battle with the council last year looked to have halted any such plans. This would mean routing all of the South Lanes traffic down into Northern Lights quiet corner of the world. This combined with a negative outcome for Northern Lights in the upcoming hearing on Tuesday March 3rd, would place an incredible squeeze on the business, result in the loss of jobs. It could easily suffocate them into being inoperable.

There is no big company backing them up and there are no expensive legal teams that can be called in to fight their cause (a perk enjoyed by aforementioned chain-bars), but we who support them can still make a difference.

We urge the council to protect Northern Lights, and to honour their own “Statement of Licensing Policy” in which they encourage diversity amongst premises in order to cater for as many different members of the community as they can. Promoting these policies they say “gives potential for positively changing the ambience of the city or an area of it.” Right now however, the risk is being run of not only alienating the Scandinavian community of our city, but negatively affecting that ambience.

There is no saying that this petition will have a defining impact upon the hearing, but we can at least show our support for Northern Lights, for the cultural diversity which Brighton is famed for, and for the plight of independent businesses everywhere.

*We have just four days to do so.*

As usual with a midweek DJ gig the first hours are somewhat quiet and then around ten it improved. Place git buzzing. Punters started jiggling to the music, and the vibes improved. Had a free dinner as well, the famous Scandinavian fry up , known as Pyttipannu (Finnish) or Pyttapanna (Norway and Sweden).

It is a hodgepodge of food similar to bubble and squeak. The term is Swedish for "small pieces in pan". It is a popular dish in Sweden, Norway and Finland, and in Denmark, where it bears the name biksemad, meaning food which has been mixed together.

Traditionally consisting of potatoes, onions, and any kind of chopped or minced meat (or sausage), diced and then pan fried, it is often served with a fried egg, pickled beetroot, sour pickled gherkin, capers and sometimes ketchup or brown sauce. The dish was originally made from leftovers of past meals but now it is far more common to prepare pyttipanna from prime ingredients. Frozen pyttipanna of many varieties can be bought in almost every Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish supermarket. Many variants of the dish exist, including vegetarian and vegan versions.

Along with Swedish meatballs it is one of my favourite meals as well as the famous reindeer meat that the Northern Lights have around this time of the year.

I digress a bit, and was going to do the playlist from last night. I shall do that in a following post.
jazzy_dave: (Jazzy D in da house)
Eamon, the event organiser, does not know how to count the last Wednesday of the month. He expected me too do my gig last Wednesday but it  was not the last Wednesday of the month. So i had to share stage with a folk troupe. Well, to be exact, they were  upstairs from about 9 pm  and i was downstairs from 8 pm playing my jazz, funk and soul grooves.

They finished their little gig before i did as it got quite busy. I finished dead on midnight.

jazzy_dave: (jazzy spins)
I ended up having two and a half pints of that strong brew in the Summoner pub. Well at the price i just had to imbibe. Obviously when i got home i fell asleep soon after watching Eggheads.

So on Wednesday my original plan of popping down to Sussex is back on again. Another night of DJ-ing at the Northern Lights in Brighton!

I arrived at the Northern Lights at 8 pm , so a bit later than i would have normally liked. Eamon, the events manager at the brasserie, had forgotten that i was doing the gig and i had to wait for a couple of ladies to finish their Swedish meatballs before i could hump my equipment on to the table. So in the end, i didn't start till just after 8.30 pm, By then i had already downed one Tuborg lager. I think i had about six of them in the end , all free!

It turned out to be a busy night and i finished dead on midnight. So here is the playlist.
