Barry Lyndon

I have just finished watching a DVD, the three hour long Stanley Kubrick film, Barry Lyndon (from  1975) based on the William Makepeace Thackeray novel "The Luck Of Barry Lyndon". It even has a short intermission. You really do not get many films these days with an intermission.

A good but long film. The use of natural lighting without  recourse to electric lighting was quite innovative and made it such a beautiful film to watch.

This DVD was one i recently found for fifty pence in a charity shop along with another Kubrick classic "Dr. Strangelove".

A Bland Morning

Listening to that Bobby Bland album again after a very long time has reminded me what a great singer he was, not just of the blues but also soul. In fact, one of his records use to do the Northern Soul circuit back in the seventies. That track being "Gotta Get To Know You", which like most of his sixties output was on Duke Records. So here it is -

Enjoy.

Thinking Aloud

Nicked from [livejournal.com profile] spikesgirl58 is this quizzical meme.

You Are a Thinker

You love to spend time by yourself, and the friends that you have in your life tend to be of the thoughtful vareity.
You are content to have a few good people in your life. Your friends are probably as compassionate and loyal as you are.

At work, you tend to be reliable and detail oriented. You don't bury problems, and you enjoy challenging projets.
In general, you strive to do as much as you can correctly. You want to be the best person that you can possibly be.

Postmodern Historian

From the pages of Making History on the BBC Radio 4 website i did an eleven question quiz and these are the results.

What Kind of Historian Are You?

You tend to be a postmodernist historian. Postmodernists are sceptical of easy explanations, or 'grand narratives' of history. Traditionally written history is therefore a product of a field of power relations which reflects the biases of its times and its writers. Rather than emphasising the events and their causes, there is a tendency to evaluate the sources themselves, giving a close textual reading to see what they reveal about attitudes of the time, the idea being that interpretations are as revealing (if not more so) than the facts themselves. Postmodernist historians include Michel Foucault, Keith Jenkins and Hayden White.
