I'm a military historian by trade and the 'true realities of gun use' are than guns are for killing things.
Dave and I live in a country with very strict gun laws- some of the strictest in the world- and there is very little gun crime here to the extent that even a single shooting, let alone a mass shooting, is huge, front page news and it was a mass shooting of kids in Dunblane, Scotland some years back that created our present gun laws.
But that's my point really- I suspect that an awful lot of people see them as something to make them feel big and powerful. I'm a soldier's daughter and know all too much of what gunpowder weapons can do to the human body.

Well, sadly, we Americans just ain't had enough kids killed yet. Maybe we're getting there. Another few hundred kids slaughtered should do the trick, maybe.
