From Brum and Rugby To The World

Following comments from [livejournal.com profile] kabuldur I thought I do a musical post. I was born in Rugby, 12 miles from Coventry and 30 miles from Birmingham.
So here are some bands from the Midlands.

Brummies first -

Steel Pulse - Handsworth Revolution

UB40 - King

Now an eighties band from Rugby whom I did not get to know, oh well.

Spacemen 3 -Big City

They formed in 1982 in Rugby, Warwickshire by Peter Kember and Jason Pierce, known respectively under their pseudonyms Sonic Boom and J Spaceman. Their music is known for its brand of "minimalistic psychedelia".

Spacemen 3 had their first independent chart hits in 1987, gaining a cult following, and going on to have greater success towards the end of the decade. However, they disbanded shortly afterwards, releasing their final studio album post-split in 1991 after an acrimonious parting of ways.

They gained a reputation as a 'drug band' due to the members' drug-taking habits and Kember's candid interviews and outspoken opinions on recreational drug use. Kember and Pierce were the only members common to all line-ups of the band. Both founding members have enjoyed considerable success with their respective subsequent projects: Sonic Boom/Spectrum and Spiritualized.

Sonic Boom - Help Me Please

Spiritualized - Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space

J.Spaceman -aka Jason Pearce - of Spacemn 3 later floated into drum n' bass with a friend, Ashley Wales, calling the band Spring Heel Jack, and then free improvisation.

Spring Heel Jack - Midwest

Spring Heel Jack - There Are Strings

They did two major drum n' bass albums and I have both of course. They did other albums but nowhere near as good.

Then they morphed into jazz territories - and it became even more interesting.

From the CD "Amassed" (Thirsty Ear)

Yes,I have both being a jazzer, and the "Live" album.

In between his work with Spiritualized and Spacemen 3, Pierce has been active with a network of free jazz players and improvisers, collaborating with acclaimed artists, including Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Dr. John, Primal Scream, Daniel Johnston, and Yoko Ono among others.

Masses (2001), the first of several albums for the cross-genre Blue Series on Thirsty Ear, was an even more radical departure from drum n' bass. Collaborators included saxophonists Evan Parker, John Tchicai and Tim Berne; bassist William Parker; trumpeters Roy Campbell, Kenny Wheeler and Wadada Leo Smith; trombonist Paul Rutherford; drummer Han Bennink; pianist Matthew Shipp and others.

Enjoy.
