On April 1971, Gould wrote to a fan "I have always felt that among the earlier generation of romantic composers, the most sadly underestimated is Felix Mendelssohn. In my opinion, the precision of craft winch Mendelssohn exhibits, especially in his orchestral music, is equalled by few composers in the 19th century and that craft, moreover, is put at the service of an extraordinarily touching, neo-devotional attitude winch I find particularly alluring".
