Mark Rowlands "The Philosopher At The End Of The Universe" (Ebury Press)

This book had a good premise but in the end i found it disappointing.
The main reason is that in my humble estimation not all of the film/theory pairings work well. I get the impression that this would make a fun lecture series for an "introduction to philosophy for a humanities class, where there's a back-and-forth dialogue between the professor and his students. Perhaps that is how this book was formed. Perhaps it is not rigorous enough for my liking, the meat is there but straggly, a morsel that does not satisfy the intellectual palette, and hence, not as stimulating. . After reading Hegel, Adorno, Derrida, Sartre, Foucault, Marcuse et all , this lacks the flavour i seek. Even the two Buffy studies i have read have more philosophical juiciness than this paperback.
So, in the final analysis, a somewhat interesting and occasionally entertaining look at modern philosophy, but overall it wasn't the greatest read. If you do come across this book then i would say do not dismiss it out of hand, as there are some good points in it, but do not expect it to as revelatory as some of the philosophy books i have read on pop culture.
