'Red USA' always makes me smile as it sounds so un European- here that'd mean Socialist, as in Red Vienna.

True to the region though, isn't it. I quite like the way that it plays into the story. The way that Tara struggles with her Bible-quoting mother, who's such a screw-up, despite thinking that she's better than everyone. The way that Lafayette rails against it all. I think it's good for local colour and scene-setting. Such a wildly different culture to the TV norm.

I always knew that those Southern folk were wild and crazy. All that religion really does fuck them up!

But, to their credit, they don't play the religious card in any evangelical way. They portray the fundamentalists as the crackpots they typically are. I take it you aren't deep into the series as yet? Lots happens to those ultra religious characters ... stuff one would not expect (but really, would expect) them to be capable of. All very twisted (in True Blood fashion).

Oh that is good to hear. I like to see some of those nutters get their comeuppance.

The whole series was a metaphor for how religion fucks people up!

That's the trouble I had when I started to watch the second season. All that cult crap. I stopped watching and haven't gotten back to it yet. :p

I had trouble with the religious aspect of the show and quit watching early on, myself.

My problem with True Blood is that it was too frackin' ugly and stupid. I quit watching somewhere in the midst of season 4, finished watching it via dvd, then looked at a few of season 5 and quit forever. By all accounts it got only more stupid.

The very idea of Jindal et al. as socialist makes me fall over in hysterical laughter! They are destroying everything that is good and wonderful that's Louisiana as fast as they can, and dismanteling everything 'public' such as education, health care (hey, they were always that way about levees) -- in the grand antebellum, slavery loving planter elite conviction -- that anything that doesn't directly benefit their personal finances is an attack on them, and god's command that everyone who isn't them is fit for nothing but slavery.

P.S. I know the state very well -- have lived in New Orleans, and go back constantly -- such as next week again, for a conference at which we give the plenary address, and to see friends. We'll be staying with one for a couple of days who is living in the part of Louisiana that might be called True Blood country.

Mmmmmm....I think this aspect of the show put quite a few people off, even though most will point to the fairies and Season 5, but it is ACTUALLY the religion that ties the entire show together, beginning to end and through the middle. It's important and vital to Bill's arc. The religion = vampirism = sexuality = individuality = the meaning of life.

That's what made me react.

Unfortunately we've just elected a government (well not me- I didn't vote for the Tories) here in the UK which thinks pretty much the same way- anyone who isn't them or their privileged Oxbridge crowd and rich friends is worthless.

I followed the UK elections and was appalled as well.

Our insanity (USA insanity) is spreading like the Plague of the 14th century.

So it seems.

As a 'real' socialist (ie not 'New Labour') I have nowhere left to go. :o(

No need to be sorry, sweetie. Tis one more reason I avoided that show...

Yeah, think i will stick with that one season, but being an atheist i see how religion is the opiate of the people.
