Ukraine - More Explanations
Mar. 3rd, 2022 11:50 pmWhy is Ukraine the West's Fault?
UnCommon Core: The Causes and Consequences of the Ukraine Crisis
John J. Mearsheimer, the R. Wendell Harrison Distinguished Service Professor in Political Science and Co-director of the Program on International Security Policy at the University of Chicago, assesses the causes of the present Ukraine crisis, the best way to end it, and its consequences for all of the main actors. A key assumption is that in order to come up with the optimum plan for ending the crisis, it is essential to know what caused the crisis. Regarding the all-important question of causes, the key issue is whether Russia or the West bears primary responsibility.

Forward Planning
Mar. 3rd, 2022 06:43 pmI have spoken to my bro -
coming42 - every day and decided to have four days down there in Brighton from Monday 14th, as I think the change will be good and it will help him through this grieving process.
Meanwhile, I have visits to Canterbury and London before I go down to the south coast as well as a second train expedition tomorrow. After yesterday I need a new vibe.
I also hope that bro can regain his enthusiasm to read books again after the passing of his wife.
I may need to bring earphones and an mp3 player. I cannot stand Classic FM aLL day lol!!

Thursday Thoughts
Mar. 3rd, 2022 06:10 pmA lovely sunny warm day.
I popped into town to get some urgent provisions for food and coffee of course. I popped into my local for a few beers as well.
I did feel somewhat disgruntled that I will not be paid for two charity store jobs I did yesterday, but then after discussing it with the supervisor for the research company, they said their hands were tied, and can't put it through as the client will not accept it - well, in fact, we both agreed that this fucking client does not distinguish between Gift Aided items and non-gift aided! It is minor but so many other shoppers like myself have been tripped up by it. Their labels are confusing but the six-digit bar code they use is too close to the ID number they use for a gift-aided product, and the rules are purchases are one of each (one GA and non GA) at each test shop location.
Anyway, accepting the fact that this is something that they can not fix and often told the client the problem I am not doing any more British Red Cross charity covert visits in the future. Luckily I keep all receipts so when I visit Canterbury on Saturday to do a Shelter store visit I can return a cardigan - bought for £8.50 from Deal - at the Canterbury Br.RX - and get my money back! That one is right next to a Spoons pub too!!!
I will keep the books and the lovely black T-shirt I got from the Hythe store. Oh and whilst in Hythe, I picked up some fine records and CDs from the Demelza charity store, and these kinds I will post in a later post.

Monday Musings
Feb. 14th, 2022 10:13 pmMost of the day was dry and a little warmer than the weekend. Today I did a couple of mystery shop visits in Strood and Maidstone. The latter being a coffee and cake visit.
For dinner, I had a chicken and bacon pasta dish.
I know that my bro misses me already, so I hope to stay in Brighton for a few days next week after I have done all the work that I must do this week. He seems so lost as to what to do, he has lost his interest in television and, maybe reading as well, and simply listens to Classic FM. He needs some focus and perhaps I may be able to help there.

Thursday Thoughts
Feb. 3rd, 2022 05:42 pmI arrived home at three in the afternoon. Had a very good journey up from Brighton with just one pit stop to have a tasty, chargrilled chicken with chips at Spoons in Maidstone.
I spoke to my bro when I arrived in my flat to see how h was and what was the itinerary of the day. I will call him after work tomorrow.
Friday, I have four visits that include two charity shops. One in Sittingbourne and one in Strood in Medway. Then I have a Lindt chocolate store visit to do at Bluewater and finally a mobile phone store in Sheerness.
I know I hate to leave him alone but at some stage like all widowers he will have to get use to it. You know, I have decided – if he does not mind - to visit him once a month after this awful time because firstly he is my brother and we both love music food and stuff. Plus, he is my big brother, and I must strong to be there for him.

Wednesday Musings
Feb. 2nd, 2022 09:21 pmIt has been a rather emotional rollercoaster but stoically we are moving forward towards getting things ready for the funeral such as the death certificate, the funeral company, and so on. I have to travel back to Faversham tomorrow as I have work and other commitments. But I will be back to see my bro for a few days next week.
Mike does have a wonderful neighbour a few doors away who comes in every day to make sure he is okay, that is Amelia, who will also attend the funeral.
We have also chosen the music for the funeral and had a few tears together.

Saturday Swinging
Jan. 22nd, 2022 08:53 pmWell, that was an interesting day. I had to pop into town to post an LP I sold on Discogs, and on my walk-up West Street I met Amanda outside the Refinery coffee shop. So, I had a coffee with her and a chat. I then looked around the market, perusing some charity shops, before heading towards my local pub. Ewart arrived around 2.30 pm and I gave him five Bob Dylan CDs from the haul from Tony yesterday.
Whilst we were in the pub, Amanda arrived and I had a quick chat with her, before continuing my rapturous and enveloping discussion with Ewart about music, culture, and politics. I gave Amanda my phone number for a possible meet up mid-week forthcoming.
Four pints later we departed our separate ways. Dinner was cheesy pasta with garlic.

Jan. 20th, 2022 08:20 pmArrived home just after seven this evening after leaving this morning at around eleven. I have done my two visits but now need to do the reports. Before doing that though, I had a hot shower before doing anything else and hence now in my evening dressing gown only. I will check all my comments as well, so once that is done and I have time, I will be back blogging. Well, maybe. I still do not know the situation with bro at the moment.
So far ...
Jan. 20th, 2022 10:01 am2022 has not been a good year for the Sumner clan. Bro had to be rushed into clinical care due to excruciating leg pain. The stress cannot be good for him leading to this situation. Ros is still in intensive care. And who is looking after the cat, Riley?
I cannot help but worry, so I do need to do these two visits to keep my mind off it. I have jobs in Gravesend and Bluewater to do. That will keep me occupied.

Over the years I have found the idea of nuance to be disappearing from conversations and from how simplified language has become. In fact, as we have become more digitalised our grasp on nuance has become weaker. We get polarised into two different diametrically opposed factions. Take politics for example as being a prima facie aspect of this polarisation. Of course, vocabulary is an important fact of this situation and I do feel that the less we read and discover new words or different nuances the less tolerable we become. Digital culture has made us become less nuanced and more radical or recalcitrant against opposing views.
Social media, overall, is definitely cursed by this lack of nuance, except for a few places such as LiveJournal. When it comes to the written word itself, then the majority are caught in their own tribal proclivities except for the more balanced views of the Guardian newspaper. I must admit I do not know which American newspaper has a similar nuanced viewpoint of the world. Some may argue that such papers are elitist, and once again, we are caught in this tribalism. I even occasionally fall into that same trap and dismiss red top papers such as The Sun, and then must check myself for not understanding why readers of that rag have differing viewpoints. Oh, and there I go again calling it a “rag” in such dismissive terms.
And yes, I do love nuance and the discovery of words and meaning.
So dear reader, what are your thoughts and viewpoints? Concurring or opposing, all will be read and not cancelled.

TuesdayThoughts
Jan. 18th, 2022 05:25 pmDon’t you just hate it when somebody pedantic wants to fuss up on the difference between ale and beer? Technically, they are correct in the sense that ale does not have alcohol-free versions. I do not give an arse on the fine minutiae between the words. I just hate nonalcoholic beer. So there!
So, talking of the golden substance known as craft ale, my local pub now has Leffe Blonde on tap. This is a richly delicious 6.6 % ABV craft ale that I suppose is more of a lager than a beer. The difference is in the fermentation process. At least, it gives the punter a further choice.
Last night I watched all my current quiz shows on the telly; Only Connect, Univesity Challenge, and Mastermind plus Counterpoint on the radio. I find it's a great way to stimulate the old brain cells. I then read a while before falling asleep. I was already in bed by then.

Sunday Slouching
Jan. 9th, 2022 07:52 pmIt was a slightly warmer day than yesterday. But the main factor is that it was much sunnier. I walked into town to get some flypaper that traps them in a gooey death. The shop that sells them was closed but I could swear they are normally open on a Sunday. Oh well, | I will get it tomorrow when I see Ewart at my local.
So, I walk into town today and pop into my local pub first. Just with ten minutes of drinking my pint that damn woman who helped me off 5the ground the day before New Year's Eve walked into the pub and accosted me for not giving her twenty pounds for the damage of her iPhone sc5reen which she said was forty-five quid and could I go halves. I do not remember damaging her phone and asking her to come round on the Tuesday after the new year. She sounded very distraught because apparently, she need some photos from her phone for the funeral of her auntie or something. I tried to deflect he and having finished my pint walked fastly down the road but as she had a bike so I could escape. In th3e end, I thought the only way to get rid of the vixen is to give her the twenty she demanded.
I really could do without this hassle. I am ow doubting whether it was teenagers who took my twenty quid from my wallet when I FELL DOWN OR IF IT WAS HER that evening.
I must admit, I did not expect to be twenty quid lighter today. If she ever comes back it will be considered stalking in my estimation, and the police will know about it.
As usual, if you want to donate use the PayPal address -

So, after that altercation, I felt the only thing I could do is go home with a can of beer from the newsagents.

And In Other Things ...
Jan. 7th, 2022 04:50 pmI hope that sister-in-law Rosalind will get better soom. I do worry about her, as much as my bro. So here is hoping through that inexorable scintillation of time between now and when the medical people know exactly what to do.
Meanwhile, I have been playing some pastoral music to calm the savage breast that curdles inside my tangled brain. Oh and finishing off that free bottle of wine lol!
Meanwhile, the very good news of those who pulled down the Edward Colston statue in Bristol. They were acquitted.
Britain’s shameful slavery history matters – that’s why a jury acquitted the Colston Four.

Tuesday Thoughts
Dec. 28th, 2021 05:22 pmAnother miserable wet day and this time windier but milder. At least the late afternoon was dry. So, I decided to stay in and listen to music for part of the day and reading paperbacks for the other part. I stayed with classical music in general and took out from my collection the following.
Stravinsky – The Rite of Spring
Bartok – Music for Strings Percussion and Celeste
Mendelssohn – Scottish Symphony No. 3
Bartok – Bluebeard’s Castle
I have been re-reading the Howard Goodall book on the history of Western art music. I have now reached the turmoil of the twentieth century hence the music above except for Felix and his “romantic” age Scottish symphony.
I will probably continue with the more serial dodecaphonic avantgarde music of late-twentieth-century art music.
Tomorrow we will be back to normal days after the two public holidays we have had to endure. Hence the usual bus times are back, and I will be heading into town to meet Phil and Ewart for a few beers at my local pub in the afternoon. I might take a quick trip in the morning to Rainham to see what CDs I could get dirt cheap at the Sunburst Bookshop.

Monday Musings
Dec. 27th, 2021 06:27 pmI did find today a little frustrating due to the fact of the wet weather we have been having lately.
At one instantaneous moment today, I felt overwhelmed by boredom, and that rarely happens to me, so despite the weather, I had to pop out to my local store. In fact, a couple of ciders made me feel quite calm and collected afterwards. We all can get stir crazy if we do not go outside on a regular basis. Of course, there are some professions where this is impossible, such as being in a submarine or in a shuttle in outer space.
Another factor that has irked me is the fact that due to Xmas Day and Boxing Day being on a Saturday and Sunday we now have two public holidays – today and tomorrow, and that means I have no bus routes to town or towards Maidstone and Sittingbourne due to no services on public holidays. Wednesday will be the first normal day again.
Anyway, today I had the curry I was going to have on Xmas day. It matured in the slow cooker for a day and all the juices macerated into this smooth and very hot spicy flavour. Boy, it had a kick to it! Thank goodness I had cold cider on hand.
Today I watched a documentary on the history and making of West Side Story, composed by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. I am not into musicals as such but this one is a particular classic in my opinion.
I have been catching up with the Christmas University Challenge which has the elder alumni rather than the students. Anyway, I did as well as the majority of the alumni and even better in places and particularly on the music questions. I felt immensely proud of my broad knowledge gained over many years.

Friday Frolics
Dec. 24th, 2021 09:53 pmIt was another mild and sometimes sunny day reaching around 10C by the afternoon. After an alcohol-induced siesta, I am awake now and noticed that it is raining this evening, so the forecast was fairly accurate I thought.

I popped into town to get the odd things I forgot yesterday and to get some stuff from the market including a wonderful and cheap Italian Merlot.
Lunch was a spicy sweet and sour chicken and rice dish with garlic mushroom accompaniment.

Last night I watched Toy Story 4 and today I watched the classic North By Northwest, one of Hitchcock's best films in my opinion.
I also have been rewatching the complete WandaVision on Disney+. I look forward to a new series or film with the Scarlet Witch aka Wanda.
It is going to be a bit tight moneywise till my next big payday which falls on the Saturday in the New Year, so will I get paid before then or have to wait till the fourth of the new month?
