Cheikh Lô / Toumani Diabate At The Dome
May. 29th, 2006 07:20 amA really lively evening from the masters of African music,Cheikh Lô from Senegal and Toumani Diabate from Mali at The Dome, closing down the latest Brighton Festival. Both artists had lots of musicians with then creating a sound so rhythmic and highly dancable,i felt like leaving my seat and, in the best tradition of the Citreon ad,SHAKING MY ASS!
Also very colourful too. Puts us to shame. I think i will go native and wear colourful robes and beads ala African.
Interestingly, Toumani's first album on Hannibal Records was produced by Joe Boyd and so it links in with the discussion the previous night,in which at one point Joe discovered "world music" after his period with English folk and folk-rock.Joe's next book will be about global sounds. The label "wprld music" is so often misuesed, and as in the Wire,i prefer to use the word "global" music.
Well i have been inspired to do not one playlist but two so without further ado HERE WE GO.
