On this LP on Hyperion on Side 1 is an electroacoustic piece by Denis Smalley called "Pneuma" which has no text but uses vocal utterances with tam tams,Chinese gongs ,and is closer to sound poetry than other forms of composition. I thought I had another composition by him but it turns out be by a Roger Smalley called "Pulses" (NMC CD 1994) for brass, percussion and ring modulation. Anyway there is a link to  a biography of Denis Smalley at http://www.city.ac.uk/music/staff/dsmalley.htm

Anyway, thinking they may be related spun that idea on its head - it was just coincidence they share the same surname. There is a  potted biography of Roger is to be found at

However it would have nice to think tthat hey are related.

Going back to this Hyperion LP picked up for £2 - a total bargain - in mint DMM mastering there is a composition by Simon Emmerson called "Ophelia's Dream II" . I thought the name was familiar then i remembered he appeared on "Digswell Duets" with Lol Coxhill (reissued via Emanem - a superb improv label by any standards).

Also i note that confusion here can arise as he has the same name (forename and surname) with another Simon Emmerson, former leader of The Afro Celt Sound System, as i discoverd whilst googling.

Another link tand information about Dr. Simon Emmerson  at http://www.mti.dmu.ac.uk/membersdetail/emmerson/research.htm
