Television
Feb. 9th, 2011 08:18 pmA couple of mild days combined with glorious sunshine this week has been very welcomed.
Sunday night Tim and I went up to the Dover Castle pub for a few beers but I followed behind as I watched the latest episode of Being Human on BBC3. It turned out to be fortuitous as I missed Tim singing with some people on the open mike night , or should that be strangling a cat? Luckily I did not have to bring any industrial earplugs.
Tuesday night I wanted to watch the next lecture in the Justice series on BBC4 but I saw Tim squirm in his seat. He obviously does not like TV lectures and probably does not know any philosophy except for knowing some of the names of the early Greek philosophers. This recent lecture was about pleasure and whether it was better to aim for high cultural pleasure (as it lasts longer) rather than the less sustaining pleasure of low culture. Sandel gave a few examples of high and low culture - a clip from Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”, the TV programme Fear Factor and an episode of the Simpsons. Again he quoted from Jeremy Bentham and this time John Stuart Mill , both philosophers of utilitarianism.
I used the BBC i Player on my laptop to watch the thirty minute lecture.

BBC4 also has a series on books and I have yet to watch any of them.
