Gently Northern Soul
Aug. 27th, 2012 08:53 amLast night I watched a few episodes of The Big Bang Theory and the new Inspector George Gently drama series on BBC1. It was based around a Northern Soul club in the late sixties and the background music being played was of that era, even down to a mention of the rarest Motown single, Frank Wilson‘s “Do I Love You?” . Also played by this lass on the decks was a track by Archie Bell and The Drells, but I did notice two slip ups form the Beeb. Two songs which were somewhat anachronistic, as they both belong to the following decade, namely the seventies. One by Marvin Gaye and the other which ended the drama by Bill Withers, his “Lean On Me”. Oops, somebody didn’t do their research effectively! Also, the term Northern Soul was not used till 1970 by Blues & Soul magazine writer Dave Godin.
