Lars Gustaffson "The Tale Of A Dog" (The Harvill Press)

Lars Gustafsson is an author with the rare ability to distill insightful philosophical explorations from stories of everyday life. In Tale of a Dog, he weaves a riveting hodgepodge tapestry of good and evil as seen through the eyes of an Austin bankruptcy judge. The stories of Austin personalities ring true to those familiar with the quirkiness of the Austin scene, where everyone is a student of something. Gustafsson, typically, steps into the shoes of the outsider, the pretender. He is a Texan who doesn't like Tex-Mex; a Judge who cannot decide; a member of the social elite who prefers the company of his road-hard hairdresser. The fun is in Gustafsson's ability to show us the world from the outside and turn the small things large. The meat is in Gustafsson's ability to draw us to his characters' world of profound moral ambiguity

Bearsted and Bromley Visit
Nov. 21st, 2012 08:32 pmToday I did a couple of visits on a day that turned out to be very wet and windy. After posting off a few books from sales on the Play Trade site, I first took the bus over to Maidstone and the village of Bearsted to do a pub visit. Being a Green King tied house they had the usual IPA but also a couple of alternatives. I tried one of each, a pint of White Horse War Horse (4.9 % ABV) and a pint of Green King 1799 (4.5 % ABV).

Then I took a train up from the village to Bromley to do a charity shop visit. I bought two books, a DVD and a couple of CD's for five quid in total.
The DVD is “Lost In Translation” , a film that has been one of my favourite for many years.
The books are -
Melissa Katsoulis “Telling Tales” (Constable)
Naomi Klein “No Logo” (Fire & Water)

One of the CD's is for my cousin and the other is the follow up to “Endtroducing” by D.J. Shadow “The Private Press”. Another fine slice of turntablism form the master of sampling and scratching. I think it is filed under trip hop.
