Jeanette Winterson "Boating For Beginners" (Methuen)

Boating for Beginners by Jeanette Winterson

Boating for Beginners is an alternate retelling of the genesis myth. While some parts of this book were genuinely funny and it was a quick and easy read, other parts became boggy and struggled, the humour came across as forced and the book meandered around with no point or direction, a bad thing in such a short book.

Not a bad book but not an easy or naturally flowing book, and very disappointing after  "Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit"

Wednesday afternoon I had an interview over the island and have yet to hear from the company if I was successful. Whilst in Sheerness i did a mystery shop at a Red Cross charity shop.

Picked up two CDs and six books for a fiver. The books were a mixed bag, nothing to get enthused about except for a biography of Spike Milligan and the curiously titled "Thank You For Smoking" by Christopher Buckley.

The CDs are both interesting jazz albums , particularly the classic 1962 recording "The Bridge" by Sonny Rollins (RCA). This was a return to recording after a couple of years away from the limelight.whilst Sonny looked into himself to focus his next move in the world of jazz. It is magnificent, with an ace rhythm section.

The other CD is by the Honolulu based man of exotica Arthur Lyman and  is called "Leis Of Jazz" (Rykodisc). This originally came out in the late fifties ( the actual date is 1959) but reissued on CD in 1998 . This is Arthur in his jazziest mood, all standards , but done with panache and style.
