Wednesday was a lovely hot sunny day. So I took off to Faversham to sell some paperbacks st Past Sentence for  money needed for my trip to Canterbury on Thursday. Together with remittances that came in from Play Trade and Optimum Contact i shall be eating out at the Wets Gate Inn. This too is another mystery shop visit.

I have been reading "Retromania" by Simon Reynolds, and it is one of those music book that you cannot put down but keep reading. Being a contributor to Wire magazine  means that his depth and breadth of knowledge is outstanding and his musings intelligent and thought provoking. Probably why i am still awake early in the morning.

Retromania: Pop Culture's Addiction to…

Curatorially fascinating as well. I concur with his notion that with music being a mouse click away has somehow devalued music , but also has opened up avenues of discovery that would have been difficult before. This leads me onto my next gig down at the venerated Northern Lights. I shall be taking a divergent bifurcation through the less travelled (for me anyway) pathways of pop , electronica , electroclash and mashups. The focus on jazz will be lower, with more soul oriented  grooves.

The gig is on the last day of the month and i shall be returning back to the quiescent village the day after.

As well as jazz , I am into what Wire magazine calls modern composition. Giya Kancheli falls into that category. Modern classical music with an edge you could say -

Symphony no.2 was composed in 1970, whilst numero seven was composed  in 1986. he is a Georgian composer now resident in Belgium.

In his symphonies, Kancheli's musical language typically consists of slow scraps of minor-mode melody against long, subdued, anguished string discords. These passages are occasionally punctuated with "battle scenes" involving martial brass and percussion.

Some commentators talk about his music in cinematic terms; one can find equivalents of the dissollve (in his ubiquitous blurred tonal transitions), zoom (such as the long crescendo a third of the way into the Sixth Symphony), abrupt cuts (jumping from very quiet to very loud, as in the opening of the Fifth Symphony), and so on.

After a rain soaked morning the afternoon turned warm and sunny. Had a stint at the Office til high noon and then boarded a bus towards Canterbury for my mystery shop at the West Gate Inn pub . Had a delicious Thai green curry washed down with a vino and a pint of Vale Brewery Gravitas (4.8 % ABV)

Did not bother shopping around the city. I didn't want to be tempted by any books or other things in charity shops.

More obscure music from the past, this time Denmark and the year 1970 when the group Pan released their debut album. Excellent progressive art rock music.
