The Japanese can become very obsessive about certain genres of music and i remember way back in the nineties it was original bebop jazz and  soul jazz, wth the kind of hot groovy stuff coming out from the Blue Note label, and such like.

It now transpires that another form of music have them obsessively following, curating and dancing to in night clubs - that of Northern Soul - a curious early seventies subculture of sixties four to the beat Motown styled soul music that was popular in Northern England. The moniker for this genre was given by Dave Godin, whom at that time was a journalist and soul aficionado at Blues & Soul magazine.

In a BBC Radio 4  documentary by Annie Nightingale, Japan has discovered the utterly wonderful uplifting grooves of Northern Soul. And why not?, it is still one the best genre within the realms of soul and funk. Keep the faith!
