Catching Up

Cooler and misty morning dew permuted the scenery that was so crisp and dry the previous day.Alas, i fear, that colder wintry days are soon to be in the ascendant. Keeping my fingers crossed that it does not become too severe before the weekend or during the forthcoming weekend.

I have been catching up with some of the top television dramas on various channels, The Tunnel, Sleepy Hollow and Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,  and then watched possibly my favourite Dr. Who episode, "The Girl In The Fireplace", in which the good Doctor gets a snog from Madame Pompadour , whom became the mistress of Louis XV, and tragically died at the age of 42 due to tuberculosis. The ending of the story is quite sad, as he never got her to see the stars.

This episode was nominated for a Nebula Award and won the 2007 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form.

The new series of Dr. Who starts on the forthcoming Saturday.

 

The Folly Of War

With next year being the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War the BBC has decided to inundate us with a plethora of programmes across its television channels and the radio. As far as i'm  concerned this is overkill, and just another facet of the that old rearguard gung-ho jingoism that seems to pervade the current coalition.

To me, all war, is something that should not be celebrated, but best forgotten, or at the least remembered for the folly of what they are. The so called "war to end all wars" is just another excuse for the government and the media to bang the patriotic drum.

R.I.P Doris Lessing

Doris Lessing wrote one of my favourite dystopian novels "Memoirs Of A Survivor" has passed away. She straggled both the mainstream and the science fiction genre. Her most talked about book was the autobiographical "The Golden Notebook", which I have got  in my collection somewhere but yet to read.
