William Shakespeare "Hamlet" (Cambridge U.P)

This is, I believe, my absolute favorite of Shakespeare's tragedies. Primarily because Hamlet is a thinker throughout most of the play. When we first meet him, he is thinking of the inevitability of death and the loss of his father. Then he is tasked to dispatch his uncle when he learns from his father's ghost that Claudius poisoned him for his crown, and he spends the rest of the story considering the logistics of actually doing the deed.

Many of my favorite Shakespeare lines also come from Hamlet, not only the brilliant soliloquies, but also little bits like "sweets for the sweet," and "goodnight, sweet prince." Also, Hamlet provided the inspiration for one of my favorite modern plays, "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead" by Tom Stoppard.

This particular edition also includes a series of essays on the play and Shakespeare's writing, my favorite of which is an in-depth look at Gertrude by Carolyn Heilbrun in a piece titled "The Character of Hamlet's Mother." It also ends with a look at Hamlet on stage and screen, breaking down the various and varied performances of Hamlet through the years, ending with the Laurence Olivier film version (fitting since that is what inspired me to read the play in the first place and re-read it due to David Tennant's immaculate handling this time around).

Oh fiddlesticks - i have just had to re-register my internet banking because i made a mistake entering some numbers three times and i was locked out. This will be the third time it has happened, and is so annoying and i blame PayPal for holding up a payment for 44 hour or so which i needed to post a music box set.

Trip to Canterbury today to do a covert jewelry shop visit. Been a nice if not a totally sunny day for it, Had a quick bite and drink in 'Spoons whilst there. Sold some books in Faversham as well for a fiver. Re-watched the Tennant version of Hamlet again last night as well as really enjoying the series of Limitless.

Crunch week is next weekend as well.

Think i need to rejig my G Fund Me campaign as well.

R. L. Trask, Bill Mayblin "Introducing Linguistics" (Icon Books)

Another one of these graphic novel styled introduction books. This is a short introduction to the history of linguistics and it gives you short excerpts about what language is all about, where it came from, how it developed and how it's going to evolve. Some interesting chapters on how some languages share a lot in common. Also a few pages are set aside for explaining Chomsky's theories. Some interesting pages on word order and there was also some fascinating pages on sexism in language.

A great read for anyone curious about how languages evolved and developed. In fact i read this is one day.
