Major round of hoovering this morning and spring cleaning. Nowork envisoned till next weekso i have days to entertain myself.

The Jine lunch club day has been set for Tuesday 26th - which fits in nicely with my weekend break in Seaford. GC is going to have a weekend soiree with a friend on the Isle of Wight for the music festival. Her favouirte band ,The Kilers , are playing there. So i shall be house sitting. Hence i will stay there till Tuesday and comebacl with Phil after the lunch.

Today the weather is a bit dull and overcast but if it is anything like yesterday it will warm up and be very warm and sunny by the afternoon or at least late afternoon. I hope!

Immanuel Velikovsky "Oedipus and Akhnaton :Myth and History" (Doubleday)

I was given this quite some time ago by another LJ member and recently picked it out from a pile on the floor to read last Sunday. I finished the last chapter today. Although i do not know why i bothered reading this hardback in the first place.

Anyway , Mr. Velikovsky was a mid-twentieth Century controversialist, usually in the areas of biblical and Egyptian history. He began with a controversial book called "Worlds in Collision" positing that the current set of Planets in our solar system has had a number of collisions and near collisions. This upset the scientific cognescenti in the fifties. Now we think there were planetary collisions, but that Velikovsky's time scale was way out of wack. So, this attempt by the same writer, to assess the resemblances between the Greek Story of Oedipus, legendary king of Thebes, and Greek tragic figure with the possible history of the Egyptian Pharaoh Akhnaton is an interesting but not authoritative exercise.

Velikovsky appeals to Biblical literalists by finding “scientific” explanations for the miracles documented in Exodus; and Velikovsky’s sanctification of the written word and his methods of using texts appeal to deconstructionists. I can recommend Oedipus and Akhnaton to anybody who’s interested in studying the workings of a mind like Velikovsky; as Egyptian history it is, of course, valueless.
