What do you do when you’re angry?

What makes you feel young?

Where would you most like to retire?

Apparently, there is a track by Scott Walker that has been uncovered from 1967 according to the BBC News on Radio 4 this morning, and yet it originally appeared on the album, Scott, but, it also appears on the 1981 compilation, Scott Walker Sings Jacques Brel.

To be fair the recording found was a quarter inch tape of a BBC TV recording of the song Scott sang in 1967 in a variety programme, and hence is the oldest recording of the song.

Scott Walker - My Death

My death is like
a swinging door
a patient girl who knows the score
whistle for her
and the passing time

My death waits like
a bible truth
at the funeral of my youth
weep loud for that
and the passing time

My death waits like
a witch at night
and surely as our love is bright
let's laugh for us
and the passing time

But whatever is behind the door
there is nothing much to do
angel or devil I don't care
for in front of that door
there is you

My death waits like
a beggar blind
who sees the world with an unlit mind
throw him a dime
for the passing time

My death waits
to allow my friends
a few good times before it ends
let's drink to that
and the passing time

My death waits in
your arms, your thighs
your cool fingers will close my eyes
let's not talk about
the passing time

But whatever is behind the door
there is nothing much to do
angel or devil I don't care
for in front of that door
there is you

My death waits
among the falling leaves
in magicians, mysterious sleeves
rabbits, dogs
and the passing times

My death waits
among the flowers
where the blackish shadow cowers
let's pick lilacs
for the passing time

My death waits in
a double bed
sails of oblivion at my head
pull up the sheets
against the passing time

But whatever is behind the door
there is nothing much to do
angel or devil I don't care
for in front of that door
there is you

Done my first job of the day. A complaint phone call mystery shop. Next, I will be travelling up to Sheerness for a travel agent visit, then Canterbury for a TV shop visit and finally a charity shop in Hythe.
The weather is sunny and warm - which is great - because the forecast s for colder days ahead for a while.

All jobs are done. Just finishing the reports.

The charity shop had some good finds book-wise -

Chaucer's People: Everyday Lives in the…On Love by Charles Bukowski

When Ada Lovelace was a teenager, her mathematical talents led her to a long working relationship and friendship with fellow British mathematician Charles Babbage, also known as "the father of computers", and in particular, Babbage's work on the Analytical Engine. Lovelace first met him in June 1833, through their mutual friend, and her private tutor, Mary Somerville.

Between 1842 and 1843, Ada translated an article by Italian military engineer Luigi Menabrea on the calculating engine, supplementing it with an elaborate set of notes, simply called Notes. These notes contain what many consider to be the first computer program—that is, an algorithm designed to be carried out by a machine. Other historians reject this perspective and point out that Babbage's personal notes from the years 1836/1837 contain the first programs for the engine. Lovelace's notes are important in the early history of computers. She also developed a vision of the capability of computers to go beyond mere calculating or number-crunching, while many others, including Babbage himself, focused only on those capabilities. Her mindset of "poetical science" led her to ask questions about the Analytical Engine (as shown in her notes) examining how individuals and society relate to technology as a collaborative tool.

She is not forgotten as there is a computer language called Ada.

Ada is a structured, statically typed, imperative, and object-oriented high-level computer programming language, extended from Pascal and other languages. It has built-in language support for design-by-contract, extremely strong typing, explicit concurrency, tasks, synchronous message passing, protected objects, and non-determinism. Ada improves code safety and maintainability by using the compiler to find errors in favour of runtime errors.

So, there is the connection, and a book that I hope is as fascinating as this pioneer.
