Deborah Levy "The Cost Of Living" (Penguin)

There's great pleasure in this quirky and brief (134 pages) narrative of a woman's life after her marriage goes under. She finds a new place to live, a sixth-floor walkup; rides an e-bike (electric); sets up her writing space in an unheated wreck of a garden shed, and reminds herself daily that her marriage was not worth extraordinary rescue efforts. It's like hanging out with a new Brit friend who's a fantastic storyteller - you've just swept along into her everyday life, which is rendered bright and shining by her rueful words.
The opening line sets the tone: "As Orson Welles told us if we want a happy ending, it depends on where we stop the story."

Tuesday Tumblings
Apr. 23rd, 2019 11:48 pmWell, I have not done much today - sweet FA - except for going to town to post some items and sell a few books. Weather was much cooler too, with hazy sunshine and an opaque dreariness to it. Not enough for doing anything like covert shops. So really I am playing each day by ear until some decent money comes in.
Caught up with some telly this evening, University Challange, Supergirl and DC's Legends Of Tomorrow.
Read some more and finished another paperback. Seem to be devouring them rapidly at the moment.
At least I can do a local visit this week in town now that I maa back with Tern. I use to do quite a few covert shops for them some years back.
