Richard Russo "The Destiny Thief" (Allen & Unwin)

Richard Russo, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Nobody's Fool and That Old Cape Magic, reflects on the writing life in this collection of previously published essays.

From his discussion of how he managed to become a successful author when other more talented MFA students did not, to a look at humour and what we call funny (or not), to his musings on what authors may be missing by overlooking the omniscient narrative voice, Russo's essays are enlightening and entertaining reading and I recommend trying out this book.

Tue lunch club was a great success. The food was excellent and the chat convivial and sometimes funny.

Phil and I arrive quite early as we had a smooth trip down to the city. So we found suitable seating for the five of us. Lesley arrived last as usual.

I had lamb shank, the lads had gammon eggs and chips, Phil had the battered cod, and Lesley had the Wiltshire ham eggs and chips.

Quite a few beers were drunk too.

An excellent relaxing day.

I have watched a series on Netflix called Mars, which is part factual and part fiction and currently watching series two. The episode Contagion looks at the possibility of disturbing Martain bacteria which could cause pandemic infections such as the Anthrax that was released by melting snow in the Artic. Thus article although three years old highlights what could happen.
