In recent years, China’s political ambitions and its influence on world affairs have grown exponentially. There’s no doubt that China is an economic superpower. Despite this, Beijing’s future depends solely on the West. Around 40% of the Chinese economy is based around their manufacturing capabilities.
The coronavirus pandemic should force a reexamination of our reliance on Chinese made products. This is especially true for corporations who bet their entire supply chains on Chinese made parts. This presents Western governments with an unprecedented opportunity to teach Beijing a lesson for their blatant contempt towards us.
Donald Trump has already discussed the idea of sanctions, cancelling US debt obligations and drawing up new trade policies. In Britain, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab says there can be no more "business as usual" with China.
These are all steps in the right direction, but there’s a good chance politicians will continue to bark immensely and lack any form of bite. Therefore it has to be consumers who send a clear message to China...
...we must rethink our attitude towards the cheap, knock-off products that China produces and force our favourite brands to move manufacturing elsewhere.
