More weird and wonderful new releases -
People Like Us - The Mirror
In a career that has spanned more than 25 years and produced a wealth of projects, releases and sound art installations, The Mirror finds Vicki Bennett focusing purely on the function of popular music or, more specifically, the effect of its constituent parts when broken down and reassembled. Where some artists hack existing instruments and technologies to create their new sounds, Bennett has circuit-bent the songs themselves. The nostalgic warmth of one piece diverts the melancholia of another to derail our emotional response. And while this has been attempted before with various mash-ups and collages, those pieces have never resulted in something undeniably new. With The Mirror Bennett has proven herself an alchemist of popular music, able to push her source material into fresh and engaging places.
Xylouris White - Tree Song
Track from "The Sisypheans" LP/CD, available on November 8, 2019 from Drag City.
The former, a Greek lute player, comes from a Cretan folk tradition, audibly and biologically – his father and two of his uncles are each revered for their contributions to that legacy. Central in Australian drummer White’s large discography, meanwhile, is Dirty Three, notable for their ability to convey sorrow without recourse to lyrics. Here, as with Warren Ellis’s violin in Dirty Three, the meeting of tavern-tipsy stringed instrument and quietly stormy percussion achieves emotional heft.
