Jonathan Coe "The Accidental Woman" (Penguin)

A small book, and a light read to start of this year's challenge.Nothing too heavy to fry the scattered brain cells form the Xmas and New Year festivities.

It's about the life of an emotionally limited woman, Maria, and is told with an odd narrative style. The narrator frequently tells the story as if they know the woman, but I'm fairly sure they don't, and their identity is probably irrelevant. Maria's life is frankly terrible, yet somehow the book isn't depressing. Coe manages to make the various characters in the book pretty interesting, despite them really being no more than rough character sketches, and for some reason, I found myself actually caring for Maria.

Humorous and entertaining.
