Canterbury Trip
May. 6th, 2011 11:47 pmIn Canterbury today I bought a book from Waterstones, the latest Slavoj Zizek book, which is now in paperback, "Living In The End Times" (Verso).
The blurb says he is the most dangerous man in the Western world. Methinks it is a little far fetched, but he always astounds and is very though provoking. He is definitely not a friend of the right persuasion of the political persuasion.
Anyway, it was nice to see that the smaller Waterstones had some of his books in store.
I had a rest in the Bell and Crown pub, which has the best jukebox in town, and possibly the best in the whole of Kent. Quaffed a pint and a half the Old Dairy Brewery Gold Top Ale (4.5% ABV).
I decided to enjoy this scrumptious straw coloured pale ale outside, so I could smoke my pipe, and some French students came walking by, and I spotted one lovely lass , and said something like “Bonjour madan, commen't allez vous? “ and she asked me some questions from a piece of paper, which was related to the area. Answers were Rupert Bear, The Stour and the Bell & Crown pub.
One thing I did find out , an Explorer ticket from Stagecoach is at least a quid cheaper than one from Arriva or Brighton and Hove buses. Astonished it is only £5.80, compared with £6.80 or £7 respectively. Hence, the next time I travel from Brighton to Kent I will get my ticket from from a Stagecoach bus. Ace!
I also picked up a book from the Oxfam shop, “Jazz For Beginners” by Ron David for a couple of quid.
I sold some books that I have already finished reading and made some money for myself, which paid for some cherry and vinalla flavoured shag in Faversham, as well as paying for the journey to the cathedral city.
