It is sad to hear the news of the death of Tony Benn. He was a true statesman, and orator, with an intellectual rigour that many of his colleagues lack.. He was a  forthright socialist and remained so whilst many of the Labour party moved away from their socialist  ideals towards a centre right.. He will be missed.

For now, all i will say, is that i recommend you read his diaries to get a flavour of the man , for those across the pond who have not heard  of him.

I've just posted myself.

He was the man upon whom I modelled my own Socialism.

He was truly a “signpost” for us all and never a “weathercock” (to adapt a comparison he used to make). His political views often clashed with mine but I had tremendous respect for the man. His last diaries entitled "A Blaze of Autumn Sunshine" were a delight to read. Probably the best political diarist of the last 50 years.

I've been meaning to read his diaries for a while now. Sadly I was really too young to appreciate him when he was at his political peak.

Admirable man, whose efforts to establish a fairer world should be remembered and retained.

Totally agree with your there. many of his comments about the way things were going have come to pass such as globalization, corporate greed and the divide between rich and poor getting wider.

We were just listening to one of his CDs the other day! I did not realize he had died, that is sad he was a legend.

And a note about Guy Barker... I ordered one of his Cds for DH. I found it on Amazon! Into the Blue or something. It is used but that is ok as the new one was listed at $94.

Thanks for the tip, I hope it is a good one. I couldn't find the others you had previously mentioned...
