Beggars Opera
Apr. 9th, 2014 08:21 amThis morning, having just finished my eggs and toast , i watched on the catch-up feature of BBC iPlayer the first part of a series on British music in the 18th century , Rule Britannia , Music, Mischief and Morals in The 18th Century. Introduced by , broadcaster and writer Suzy Klein , it is a fascinating look at our cultural past in music. For me, the Beggars Opera by John Gay , is the highlight of the first episode, which was the first opera sung in English.
Here is a clip from the 1953 Peter Brook's film version of the opera.
Enjoy.
