The idea of a classic novel is one  that not just stands the test of time, but  in my mind at least, a book that can be life-changing The publishing companies want to have a canon but to me a classic is any book that you yourself can find something from, and hence it leads nicely to this Guardian article in which even the author of the article admits that the word (classic) becomes meaningless.

I have emerged from under the rock, thanks to all who have helped me back. Plus listening to a very funny episode of The Unbelievable Truth on BBC Radio 4 helped.

Now I guess I have to be careful when I describe a book as a classic. :o
Not that this old mind will ever stop calling them classics. LOL...
You know the old, Can't teach and old dog new tricks saying. LOL....

Hmmm...that is a word for books I've always had a quibble with. Like I think Harry Potter will be a classic series. It will stand the test of time and it will always have something important to say, not matter the times. I cannot feel the same about some of the books out there they label 'classic'. They may have been...good?...for their day and age, but there is nothing redeeming about some of them nowadays.
