Well, it turned to be another fine day despite the threatening clouds earlier on. So i took it as cue to travel over to Faversham to sell some books, which i got a fiver for, and get some salad stuff for dinner/ Having some onion bhaji with the salad , plus Spanish chorizo, a few slices of chill flavoured cheese and coleslaw. Very tasty and spicy.

Picked up a couple more visits, so tomorrow i shall be visiting Canterbury and Whitstable as well as that ice cream shop.

Reading an  awesome book at the moment called "Where Did All The Intellectuals Go? Confronting 21st Century Philistinism"  by Frank Furedi. Three chapters in and it is already hooked me in on this cultural phenomenon. He is the Professor of Sociology at the University Of Kent.

Well actually the book is about intellectuals who are not institutionalized in establishments and are free to discuss subjects not covered by their specialization, and it is this kind of free thinking intellectual that is disappearing.

1 ) In most cases personally known to me, "intellectual" may be defined as "simulating an intellect". I have known many intellectuals, and some intellects. I get along with the latter.

J. Edgar Hoover used to call them "suede-oh intellectuals", and I doubt that one of the pontificators whose jackets all had suede patches on the elbows ever got the joke.

In America, "intellectual" has become synonymous in certain circles with "over-educated leftist elitist effete homosexual" (never mind that both George Will and William F. Buckley are/were intellectual). It is a bad thing in political campaigns to let slip that you might be much more informed and educated than the average person.

As I recall, when Michael Dukakis ran for president in 1988, he illustrated this by beginning a speech with, "The Latin scholars among you will appreciate this joke."
