The Waterboys CD is excellent and i have chosen this one track because it is gorgeous, and is based on a W. B.  Yates poem, The Stolen Child.

WHERE dips the rocky highland
Of Sleuth Wood in the lake,
There lies a leafy island
Where flapping herons wake
The drowsy water rats;
There we've hid our faery vats,
Full of berrys
And of reddest stolen cherries.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.

Where the wave of moonlight glosses
The dim gray sands with light,
Far off by furthest Rosses
We foot it all the night,
Weaving olden dances
Mingling hands and mingling glances
Till the moon has taken flight;
To and fro we leap
And chase the frothy bubbles,
While the world is full of troubles
And anxious in its sleep.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.

Where the wandering water gushes
From the hills above Glen-Car,
In pools among the rushes
That scarce could bathe a star,
We seek for slumbering trout
And whispering in their ears
Give them unquiet dreams;
Leaning softly out
From ferns that drop their tears
Over the young streams.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.

Away with us he's going,
The solemn-eyed:
He'll hear no more the lowing
Of the calves on the warm hillside
Or the kettle on the hob
Sing peace into his breast,
Or see the brown mice bob
Round and round the oatmeal chest.
For he comes, the human child,
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than he can understand.

Enjoy!

Hello - I got here to your journal by accidentally clicking [livejournal.com profile] harvey_rrit's Friends Page instead of my own, but I love this poem, and this video.

Do you know Heather Alexander's version? Here it is:

Sure, and I've added you back. Hi there; I'm Jess; nice to meet you!

Heather Alexander is now Alexander James Adams - there are lots of videos of both Heather and A.J. on Youtube. In my opinion, Midsummer and Enchantment are the two best albums - Heather also did Magic, Moondust and Melancholy and A Wolfrider's Reflections. Enjoy!

If you don't mind, I'll add you too as I enjoyed our bit of a conversation over at our mutual friend's blog?

Great Yeats poem and a lovely setting.

Hi there; welcome - added you too.

I love a lot of Yeats' poems, but that one's probably my favorite.

I think 'He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven' has to be mine.

This comment thread is a goldmine-this is the only version I've heard:
Loreena McKennitt - Stolen Child

A lovely version of the song, and another singer for me to discover.

Thanks for the link, Loreena McKennitt has a lovely voice and I think I like this version best out of all three here. I wish she'd sing all the words loud enough, though!

I hadn't heard this version, but I like it. I think my favorite is still Loreena McKennitt's, though.

Eta: I love the Yeats poem, as well. But then, I pretty much love all of Yeats.
