Had a lie in due to the loud bangs last night. The dog next door was barking away merrily in the night whilst the storm was on. We had a short power cut too.

And now despite the storm it feels as though it has made no difference at all.I still feel sticky.

That stinks! You had all the annoyance of a big storm and it didn't even clear the air!! I find the use of powder , like Mennen's, can help with the 'sticky' feeling. YMMV.

Boo for power outages.

Think there's another one due - likely to hit your area than mine, though :-)

When I secure my next gig, I must lay my paws on a proper tripod - it's a little frustrating to consider the shots I missed out on, for want of being able to take long exposures. Still, wonderfully dramatic, all the same. ^_^

No power cut here, thankfully, though I think it blipped momentarily. I'd disconnected the local drive farm (well, only seven or so) as a precaution - I'd really rather not have my photography archive get fried.

At least rainpocalypse didn't take place after all, despite all the forecasts insisting it'd be bucketing down. Hopefully that remains true on the trek back home tonight - I have an aversion to spending money on taxis. =:)

A long time ago I recognized that a good tripod was a great investment and worth the money. Probably 25 years ago I spent $300 (then money) on a good Bogen/Manfrotto and never regretted it. It's not suitable for an extended day hike, I have a monopod with the same quick release bracket for that. I replaced the legs a couple of years ago, but it's the same head.

Definitely a worthwhile investment.

I'd long suspected as much, but it was a recent rental that entirely won me over - the Sigmonster. ^_^; Knowing it's not even vaguely handholdable, I went for their recommended add-on of a good Manfrotto 4-segment tripod and a gimbal mount - ye gods and little fishes, what a delight that was to use! Even that lens, once set up properly, would just spin gracefully at the slightest touch, resting precisely where you wanted it. Previously, all I'd known was a $25 cheapie that'd wobble at a breeze, and had to be locked down to maintain position - after which, the lens would often be slightly off the desired position, necessitating a bit of tweaking.. egh. Yes, it's cheap, but so damned much hassle.

How convenient do you find using a monopod? I've pondered such for the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 - handholdable, at about 3kg, but for longer periods, it's substantially more wearing than the Nikkor 300mm f/4D I normally wind up using, being much lighter, and phenomenally sharp.

I think the most use that I've gotten from a monopod was most recently shooting sports, I spent a semester shooting for the local newspaper. Night football games (American football) were very difficult to get sharp without flash, even with the ISO cranked up. For personal shooting, I got a tremendous amount of use when I was shooting at zoos, and I expect to get a lot of use when we (hopefully!) visit Europe next year for the bicentennial of the Battle of Waterloo. But when it comes to shooting at the observatory (my wife's an astronomer) or scenics where I really care about the quality, I'll usually shlep the tripod.

I bought a new camera last month, a Canon 6D kit, and the kit came with a mono-tripod: you can remove the central column and use it as a monopod. I think as a tripod it will be fairly useless as it's much lighter weight than my Manfrotto, but I think it'll be good for international travel as it's a lot lighter than my Manfrotto monopod, not to mention the mount on the camera for my Manfrotto's is huge! It's that monster hexagonal beast which I absolutely love.

We just got back from a two-week trip to find the internet and satellite TV were both down. Turned out there had been some near-by lightning strikes, and both were fried. Yesterday saw the replacement of: the UPS that powers the fiber/Ethernet converter blade, the fiber/Ethernet converter blade, and our wireless router. Next week some time we'll get the satellite receiver and see how much programming we can download via On Demand or iTunes versus buying DVDs.

It's better than August 2012: lightning struck a tree behind our house, driving a 25' chunk of pine through our roof. Blew out our TV, damaged my computer, killed the washing machine.

Yikes, think i better hope we have rain rather than all that lightning.

For some reason living at 9,000' in the middle of a forest seems to attract a lot of lightning strikes. ;-)

You people who live at sea level, jeesh!

Summer storms just seem to make summer (humidity) worse, not to mention a lot of noise if there's thunder. We've had dry lightning here in past years. Nothing like thewayne experienced, but a neighbor's palm trees lit on fire. Plus they upset our pets so much. Not fun.

Fortunately my dog didn't give a shit about the thunder, however my sisters dog woke her up very upset and she had to sit up with her to try and keep her calm.

Ah! I hate when a storm doesn't chase off the heat/humidity. Boo!
