Graham Tattersall "Geekspeak: How Life Mathematics = Happiness (Harper)

Although this short hardback is whimsical in presentation, this popular-interest math book has the serious goal of encouraging independent thinking about issues in the news that have an underlying mathematical component such as global warming issues, your level of vocabulary, being two of my favourite examples from the book.
Leavened with armchair fun, such as estimating the weight of the moon or how many flies can power a car, Tattersall's amble might revive the fashion for pocket protectors and horn-rimmed spectacles. For geeks and budding geeks out there the book is a delight.
