When a cat feels safe and comfortable in its environment it rubs its head against the furniture, the corners of walls or the bottom of curtains, leaving a substance called the facial pheromone. It is specific to cats and conveys a message of security, reassurance and well-being. Feliway is a synthetic copy of this pheromone and is proven to reassure and comfort cats, helping them to cope with changes in their environment or other stressful situations. It's available as a plug-in diffuser (plug into the electrical mains) and that is what I am using, not just for Riley but for our two other cats.
I'd say the transition from the streets to the suites is going quite well for Riley! It's a beautiful thing.
I use Feliway in my home as well. We have four cats, three boys and a girl. When we got the latest boy (also a stray rescued from the street!), he started picking on the girl, and the other boys joined in. Nothing especially violent that made me fear for her safety, but things like jumping out her when she walked by, chasing her when they don't chase each other, that kind of thing. She was showing definite signs of stress. The vet suggested Feliway and it really helped calm everyone down.
