The Angel box set has now been watched. The final three episodes in which the denouement becomes the final battle with the Senior Partners if the law firm by destroying all the members of the Black Thorn in one full sweep night. So was this a high to go out with or is it a case of a rushed finale , since the network did not want to continue. with the series? I tend to go with the latter. There was a sense of anticlimax in it all and i find it less satisfying than the ending to Buffy.

Which do i find more emotionally satisfying? Buffy wins outright. Apart from the death of Fred and Cordelia, i remained somewhat detatched.  As a whole though, these two series have been one of the best American dramas on TV. Whedon is a genius.

Yeah, my sister watched Angel back when it was first shown, and Josh Whedon fully planned to make another series. The idea was that Angel would eventually become human again, but he wanted to take an entire series over explaining how it happened. But then midway through S5 he was told the happy news - there won't be any more series. So he had to simply rip up his plans, and crush everything into the last couple of episodes. He was, not surprisingly, not very happy.

It's taken til the success of the Avengers movies for him to finally get the recognition he deserves, but I reckon the networks that cancelled his shows have probably been repenting at their leisure since.

I have to admit, like you, Buffy will always take first place. I liked Angel well enough and some of his episodes are fun, but they didn't connect with me in the same way Buffy did. Now, perhaps this is from a woman's perspective, but the women in Buffy were much stronger and portrayed in an more empowering light than the ones in Angel. It was also darker and more gritty feeling.

I agree with you. Whedon kicks ass.

Absolutely, even from my male perspective the females were stronger, confident, complex and empowering. From a gut level Buffy had more emotional depth which i found lacking in Angel.

It seemed like in Angel, everything was focused on him and his problems while Buffy was trying to save the world and get a good deal on cute shoes.

From what I remember there was going to be a sixth season set in a post-apocalyptic world, they changed things and killed off Wesley when the WB cancelled the show. The WB told them in advance so they could have an ending to give the show closure, but Joss said that he preferred the idea of ending it on Angel still fighting and never being done with his mission. It was pretty controversial at the time actually as a lot of fans didn't like Angel ending in a way that left us hanging, but Joss insisted that it wasn't meant as a cliffhanger

I do appreciate that. It was like an ending rather than a cliffhanger, but the feeling i got is that you never win but just keep on fighting. It was an ambiguous end which i believe has been taken up by the After The Fall comics.

Btw Joss took his revenge on the network for canning Angel by co-writing the satirical episode "Smile Time" with Ben Edlund, another genius writer who went on to write for Supernatural.

Oh i really enjoyed that. A Muppet show for the fans. The subtext that WB are the Muppets for letting the show go!

You have now been Algelfied! Congrats on finishing the series :-)
(I never liked Angel as much as Buffy, so I never watched that one as much).

I don't think any of us were happy about how Angel ended. Considering we were all expecting a sixth season before it's abrupt cancellation!! So yeah...no one was amused.

*HUGS*

Buffy was definitely the better of those two, although my all time favourite Whedon show, also cancelled abruptly, is Firefly
