Downland Suite
Jun. 6th, 2015 08:25 pmMore English classical music and from another composer that should be better known IMHO.
John Ireland - A Downland Suite for String Orchestra (Elegy)
The final movement of John Ireland's "A Downland Suite", transcribed for string orchestra by the composer. It is absolutely sublime.
For me, the English school of composers simply get it, and gets me. It's hard to explain why - but power it is, and it runs deeply in my blood. Bach , Mahler and Beethoven are my favourite composers by a long stretch, but my Desert Island Discs selection would be full of the English School in my loneliness and spiritual (in the alcoholic sense) starvation!
This is another of Lyrita's absolutely marvellous re-released recordings: the London Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Sir Adrian Boult.
