It is not a group, a name given to sixties soul music with an uptempo beat ,and the term coined by Dave Godin, writer, and co-founder of blues & Sou magazine, and ran a shop in London , whom noticed alot of people north of a certain area, say Birmingham in the Midlands, were buying all these oldies from his shop back in the seventies. So he investigated it, went to Wigan , Blackpool etc and found that these guy are girls were spinning , flopping and doing all dance moves to these 4/4 beat records. Hence he termed it Northern Soul.
