Not sure. Most Xmas specials are terrible though Moff did well with Xmas Carol, The Snowmen and The Time of the Doctor. RTD's Christmas episodes are awful.
while not always a fan of the Christmas shows, I am missing the Doctor a great deal and want to get to know this Doctor more. I may have to start reading some of the books
A Christmas Carole was my hands down Fav X-mas show (Day of the Doctor follows closely, but that is a Top Episode Every because 50th!! in my mind). 12 is very much a mix of Seven and Six (Six, alas is more maligned than he ever should be and from what I understand his Big Finish audios do a lot to highlight how awesome this Doctor was) - and he has just enough One to round him off beautifully. I love them all. I have favs (Four was my first remembered and fav Classic followed closely by Seven and Eight - Eight holds his own category as well) and Eleven (as the embodiment of ALL of them) is by far my fav New!Who..and threatens the others with Very!Favorite!Status most of the time. But Twelve is a good mix of them all as well (Moffat allows that, it seems...even asks for that!) and he is a lovely Doctor who wears the damage from his predecessor well, even as he tries to move past it. They all are reflections of their past selves. And Twelve is no exception. so yes...go! Read! Get fanfic (fanficcers nail him down better in so many ways) and enjoy this Doctor.
Christmas Carol was also my fav. It was clever and there was a sad. The image of the fish has always stuck with me, especially the shark drawn carriage.
My first fav Doctor was 4. !2 does make me think he is a little bit of everybody in his past.
Yes! It was the perfect epitome of a Doctor Who special. The sadness and the joy and how it all becomes such a part of who we are. Those fish...rather loved them. The whole concept was more gorgeous and fantastical than ridiculous. Just epically done.
Four was awesome, yeah?? SO epic. He has a lot of the darker Doctors in him...and with Eleven's life (and his poor handling of the Tenth's life!) it is no wonder, really. Twelve definitely grows on you, for sure. And Capaldi is an excellent Doctor!
If you'd like I can get you started with some of my own fav authors. Teaspoon is the best archive...after that is AO3. :D

I was caught up in the fact that the new series doesn't screen until next year.
