Rose McGowan is my favourite Charmed lass by miles, and as well as escaping the Hollywood rigmarole, she is a volunteer, an activist, and downright solid human. This is what she did recently.

"Friends, tonight I took off the public mask of celebrity and revealed who I am. (Sidenote: It was fucking intense.) A little bit about me- I have lived a very big life... an extraordinary life, and a very private life. I worked hard to live how I wanted- freely. So I used celebrity as a sort of cover. Behind the scenes, I spent countless hours honing my skills and becoming a master of many disciplines. Directing, writing, music, my photography, animal rescue, volunteering... Acting was my day job. And I worked very, very hard to survive Hollywood and to try not to lose it and stay in tact as a human. It took years to deprogram. I'm almost totally me again. And who I am is an artist on all fronts. Anyway, I've used my time out of the public eye to recover from deaths, catastrophic accidents, tragedies and soulful travel. I built up my strength, survived Hollywood, and patched myself back up and now I've become fully me in public. I no longer care to hide.I am the daughter of a leader, I come from a family of military men and wildly inventive artists. Thank fucking God. My dad and mom would be and are proud of me, and really, that's all that matters. All of my years of private activism and volunteering are now public. So now you know. And like G.I. Joe said,"Knowing is half the battle."

Right on!

I've read this text twice and seen only a self presentation about what a highly skilled professional she is which is a result of years of hard work and about her volunteer activity for the public good. But I didn't find what did she actually say to all those senators. It appears to be a video with her speech in facebook, but I do not know how to give a link there.

I couldn't see anything either, other than her "all about me" summary.

But the link Dave gave had her actual speech, and it really was good.

And apparently, horrifying to the powers that be, that someone called them on the BS behind their "all-one-America" images.

That speech said it in a nutshell.

I would love to know what she said. Thinks she laments Hollywood too much (and touts her artistry a little too much as well, which is VERY Hollywood in my opinion), but I do know she is fierce and outspoken when time comes around for it. Would love to know how she told them off, lol!

Alas, she really said nothing at all. That's what's terrible. It was an opportune moment and she spoke from a a level of (admitted, I'll grant that!) priviledge, but no real understanding of what she claims to be fighting for. Visiting vets and Kuwait and Afganistan are all well and good, but she needs to try to SEE (even if she can't live it) from a point of non-priviledge. I have priviledge automatically because I'm white. But I can delete some of that because I'm female. I can't speak for non-whites, but I can try to understand where they are coming from and help give THEM voice. But I can speak for women and the poverty classes -maybe I'm not there NOW, but I have been. I know the fear and uncertainty and how no one gives a shit. My husband lived on the streets once. We know what shame because you don't have enough (because someone said you SHOULDN'T - and they have five homes, six cars and live off of my taxes), but trying, trying, trying to pull yourself up by your bootstraps. We are a success story. Not completed (when does that happen, but when you are gone), but after two decades, we are finally on the up and up - with the same hard work, sweat and tears like everyone else provides for themselves and their families - but with luck and that same hard work we are getting there. No one 'gave' it to us (like some politicians will accuse), but no one would give us a fair shake, either.

That's where she needs to speak from. And if she can't, she needs to find someone who CAN - and make room on the floor and call for order so they can speak and let themselves be known. And know she has done well at that moment.

*HUGS*
