Date: 2016-03-17 04:39 pm (UTC)Interestingly two of the three are now open again with different owners, and they're both busier than ever. I think in the intervening years, either more people quit smoking or there is a new generation that never expected to be able to do so in a bar.

Date: 2016-03-17 07:25 pm (UTC)Add the smoking ban and bars everywhere (not just clubs) started closing. When people got told you could get hammered, but you can't get your nicotine fix without going outside (which some clubs would frown on and be twitchy about letting you back in), people realized 'screw this, it is cheaper to buy alchohol and bring it home and be comfortable, smoke and hang out with people I trust'.
