Hamilton Yarns At Fringe Cafe
Dec. 11th, 2005 10:10 pmTonight i saw the wonderful shambolic Jandek-like (?) Hamilton Yarns upstairs at the Fringe Cafe and Bar.They played a mixture of new and old songs but what i like most about them is the texture they add to each song and they the almost wayward abondon of melody. Hints of other outsider music like Daniel Johnsto,Jad fair or even Jandek springs to mind. It's not a slur but a complement and it is nice to have such wonderfully fine outsider noise. Occasinally twee and cute melodies occur but is never sacharrin or sugary if its apt to use such metaphors. I thoroughly enjoyed them.
Afterwards they were selling some of their CDR's but lack of funds at the time prevented me in partaking. Anyway i could always get them off their website later.
The reason for not buying then was that i bought two CD's earlier from Across The Tracks. The wonderful 3 Cd box set of Dr.Samuel Hoffman and His Theremin with orchestras conducted by Billy May and Les Baxter on the Basta label - the same guys who did "Manhattan Research Inc." the Raymond Scott anthology.
The other is the Current 93 collection on Castle Music "Judas As Black Moth" which is a kind of companion to the Nurse With Wound Collection on the same label.
I dipped into "Tape Delay" book i bought ages ago by Charles Neal as it has articles about Current 93 and others. A highly recommended book as well.
