VITAMIN B12 and LIED MUSIC
Mar. 23rd, 2006 10:18 pmThe best gig of the month tonight down at The Friends Meeting House, the one and only Vitamin B12 with support from Lied Music. and only cost £3.
The gig started about 7.30pm. Lied Music opened up the proceedings with a stunning piece of improv for a duo, with textures thick and crusty, not even spoilt by one instrument toppling over or was that part of the act. That instrument a semicircular contraption with a wire string at the top is shown in the first picture taken that evening by me.
After a short interval the members of Vitamin B12 took their postions semicircled round a standard house lamp which took centre stage. It looked all very homely. All it needed was a comfy rocking chair and Alasdair Willis's huge record collection to sample from.
Vtamin B12 is a loose collective and can expand or reduce to any number of people but tonight was mostly the core people - about eight (correct me if i am wrong).

Lied Music and their instruments.

Alisdair surveying the scene.

Stephen and his toys.

Kulo looks as though he heard a bum note and Stephen is on selecting another toy.Rubber duck anyone?
Their set lasted about 80 minutes and it never felt even that long. There was a total synergy immersed in ideas and free flowing liquid improv that melded into a collective vibe. Even the two members of Lied Music joined in on the barrage of exquisite noises. Stephen's bells was resonant throughout and the occasional blast of sax from Alisdair was a joy to behold, with intermittent dubby melodica from Stephen.Samples of voices,a ringing telephone and a cat was part off the soundscape that emerged.
Definitely the best gig of the month and maybe the year if i am to be so bold.
I also did a Dv video of the event. Haven't decided what to do it although initially it was just to have a video diary of the gig but when i decide i will let you know.

More members of the B12 collective.

The DVD looks quite good. Showed a clip of it to Stephen on Friday in the bookshop.
He found the portable machine quite impressive.
