I popped into Borderline this morning and picked up a Cd by Cabaret Voltaire "Listen With .." from 1990, a double Cd at £4.99,and the guy with the long hair said to me " Have you been to Virgin's sale?". No i said. Why? Apparently they have been selling lots of stuff at remarkable prices, and not just the usual crsp. So my interest was peaked. I actually went twice. Picked up some humungus bargains as well!!! All for £3.99 each.
Fist off "Lagos All Routes" (Honest Jons), a fantastic collection of Nigerian juju and hilife music.Arto Lindsay "Salt" (Hannibal 2004), "Music In The World of Islam,Voices/Lutes" (Topic 1994), Brian Eno "Another Day on Earth" (Hannibal 2005),Juana Molina "Tres Cosas" (Domino 2004), Eyvind Kang " Virginal Co Ordinates" (Ipecac 2004),and finaly, Various Artists "Morocco - The Call of The Oases" (Institut du Monde Arabe 2004).
Not only did i get some nice bargains but Virgin made a real COCK-UP. I had this loyalty card from them in which after ten purchases of ten pounds or more your next one is free , and i was due for a freebie. The 3 cd's came to £11.97 so all i had to do is give the sales guy £2 as i had £10 free due to the card being full. He must have had a brain seizure as he gave me £18.03 back. I was cool as a cucumber throughout this bit of luck. It was obvious - he rang up my £2 as £20 - hence the change!! I didn't let on an quickly left - but when i got outside did a little jig to myself. Not only did i buy 3 CD's cheaply but got lots of money back for my visit. THANK YOU VIRGIN (Ha ha!).
I also poppped into Brighton Books and picked up a biography of Joseph Connell "Utopia Parkway" ((Pimlico 1997) for £6.30. Stephen was suffering from another migraine as he found it diificult to give correct change from a £20 note. I hope he gets better soon,a si use to sufer from them myself in my younger years.
I popped into Punker Bunker since it is ages i visited them last. Glad i did today as i came out with a bargain. Bought the book "Cheap Date" ed. by Kira Joliffe (Slab-O-Concrete Publications 2000) fro £3.50 saving me a full £4 from its normal price. Includes interviews with Harmony Korine,George Melly, and Anita Pallenberg plus articles on Marc Bolan, obsolute technology and lots of other funky stuff.
From Edgeworld picked up "Slightly Off Kilter #4" for £2 which incluede a free improv CD of local bands including the beloved Vitamin B12.
Received a couple of funny limericks from grapholgist Dave Bennett.
Evil Barbara as she is known
Causes market researchers to groan
Her jobs are so badly paid
Tha we are all quite dismayed
Everuytime she decides to phone.
To employ Andy Parr is not really viable
A fact which is quite undeniable
His work,Mr.Postman, fails to arrive
Non-posting,he'll never survive
Which is why he's so unreliable.
I have embellished the second one to make it more undestandable to people who don't know of Andy Parr who seems to be confused what a postboxn is used for. It's for posting WORK off matey! It is so simple - you do the work and then you post it! Then you get paid for it.
Often ugly ducklings become beautiful swans such as the funny Eve -

But sometimes ugly ducklings remain ugly ducklings. Sorry EB you missed the boat.!

Nightmare alley revisited!!!
Just some of my recent purchases this year including the cheap finds at Virgin.
