Ligeti + Current 93
Jun. 13th, 2006 08:25 pmIt was sad to hear the passing away of György Ligeti at the age of 83 (although not totally surprised) despite the fact that he was unwell for a long while. I first got into his music when i saw 2001:A Space Odyssey which featured a couple of his pieces, and gave unsuspecting film-goers a taste of the avant-garde classical.
His music is modern and rigorous but also has great warmth and is quite accessible. From the incredible "Volumina" to the cool "Lux Aeterna" and eerie "Atmospheres",he has created a wonderful ouvre for generations to listen to and savour. His music will ive on.
The latest CURRENT 93 Cd by David Tibet and friends is BRILLINAT BRILLIANT and BRILLIANT. Those friends include Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance),Marc Almond,Michael Cashmore, folk singer Shirley Collins,Antony (of the Johnsons) and Stephen Stapleton (Nurse With Wound).Shirley in sombre frail form sings "Idumæa", the last part of the CD "Black Ships Ate The Sky" (Durtro Jnana) and is availabel at Resident right now. The same label us gave the excellent "Not Alone" compilation CD in which all proceeds go to Medicin sans Fronteir.Link is http://www.jnanarecords.com - As i said before the only decent charity record ever made.
