Clapham Crate Diggin'
Nov. 1st, 2006 07:14 pmUp in Clapham today on behalf of Lambeth Council. Afterwards visited my secret supplier of cheap vinyl.Came out with a few LPs and one single. The single is by The Budget Girls "Miso Hornie" (Damaged Goods 7" 1999) with a nice picture sleeve of the two young ladies who make up the group. The LP is by Jorge Ben and is called "Ben E Samba Bom" (Philips) - but uncertain of the year of release, and another copy of The Best of Tarika Blue for the stall.
And finally from there an unusual thing that looks like an LP but is a cassette enclosed in an Lp cover - "Dr.Who Theme From The BBC TV Series" (BBC 1986),which contains the original theme plus two other versions. One for the stall i think.
From a charity shop at the back of Clapham Junction station picked up the bargain of the day - one of those rare recordings of "Vexations",composed by Erik Satie, played by Reinbert De Leeuw (Philips 1983 LP) for only £1.25.
Naturally with the Poulenc playing Satie CD recently purchased on the Cheery Red label,it is one i am keeping.
Just googled and found out that the Jorge Ben LP is from 1964.Copied from the slipcue website is this evaluation -
Jorge Ben "Ben E Samba Bom" (Philips, 1964)
More classic early work, with more peppy '60s samba tracks and Ben's trademark vocal style: strong, joyful and instantly appealing. He tips his hat towards the bossa scene, too, with a swinging version of Joao Gilberto's "Oba La La" as well as a cover of fellow groover Orlandivo's "Onde Ande O Meu Amor." The arrangements on here are still rooted in the bossa-trio sound of his first two records, but there are some interesting twists, innovative approaches to the style hinting at the radical stylistic changes to come. There's a more diverse feel to this than his previous two albums, but he's soulful as ever on them all. Recommended.
Nuff said - keeping it!!
