Weekend DJ Frolics
Aug. 4th, 2009 09:03 pmA good weekend Djing at both the Northern Lights and the Hampton Arms.
Friday i was at The Northern Ligfhts and it hapende to be Niklaus graduation party as well. The decks were still shit and useless so luckily i brought the laptop with me and generally DJ'ed from that as i felt the decks would damage my vinyl too much. Belt drive lightweight crap that should be thrown in the dumper. Anyway a good mix of funky jazz and soulful grooves helped the evening along with the occassional psyche and garage stuff.
Saturday Ville,Ally and I went to London for some cheap vinyl digging at MVE in Camden and Notting Hill. Picked up lots of vinyl at 50p to £2 max, except for one at £6. We had lunch in Camden and after digging til nearly midday took a tube to Notting Hill.
We was lucky with the weather and had a fairly dry day overall whereas Brighton had torrential rain from three spoiling the Pride festivities!
Got back at 7pm and had two hours to get ready for the evening Dj set at The Hampton, the classic GAY Pride post event DISCO DISCO DANCE DANCE with the three of us (quaintly called THREE IS THE MAGIC NUMBER). It was a really good evening and a good vibe with the pub being quite busy. The new managers really dug our set, and so much so, that i now have a resident DJ gig with them every Friday and Saturday, with the first Saturday of each month being the THREE IS THE MAGIC NUMBER set (me,Ally Smith and Ville).
Sunday did the 7 Inch Sunday gig with DJ Oddsocks (Phil) and then Ville and Jake Hollywood came after being on Shoreham beach to do a bit of Sunday 7 inches. Ville did not play but Jake played some of the cheesiest music you could feat your eyes on. Both were well drunk anyway.
Here is just part of Jakko's set -
Ottowan - D.I,.S.C.O
Europe - The Final Countdown
Gibson Brothers (can't remember the title)
Madonna - Holiday
Billy Ocean - Carribbean Queen
Yep,that gives you a clue to the crap he played except for Labelle "Lady Marmalade" which is an ace tune.
Phil left at 9pm for me to finsh the set til 10.30 pm. He was going to Riki Tiks to do a second set for Ollie (who use to run the Hampton). The Riki Tiks venue is a late bar even on Sundays and they close at 2am. I popped down there to check it out after i finished a tthe Hampton. I stayed til 1.45 am and enjoyed Phil's usual mix of tunes.
Riki Tiks is a venue i want to try to get and i think Ollie would give me a go either on a Sunday or a Thursday as it seems to a well busy place that brings in lots of money and hence a better DJ fee (perhaps).
For now i am chuffed getting the regular weekend gig at The Hampton. It is something that i have worked hard to obtain and now it has come to fruition.
