Book 40 - Bernhard Schlink "The Reader"
Jul. 12th, 2012 07:34 pmBernhard Schlink "The Reader" (Phoenix)

This is really a powerful, yet graphic book about Nazi Germany and the maturation process of a young boy. Michael, the protagonist, has an affair with a much older woman who eventually disappears from his life. As an adult, Michael comes face to face with the abandonment he faced as a child when the woman is put on trial for crimes she committed as Nazi concentration camp guard. The novel is a bit slow, but very well written.

Nothing Is Simple
Jul. 12th, 2012 10:19 pmBack from Seaford today. Arrived about 4.30 pm after a very good dry journey. Totally skint till tomorrow when I should have about twenty pounds come in but is not enough to do the electricity key meter let alone go back to Brighton Saturday to do a gig with Ville at the Northern Lights. I hope that a nice sum from another company I am expecting monies from might come tomorrow although the prognosis as yet is uncertain.
Trouble is I have left the big case over in Seaford as I do intend to go on Saturday for the gig, and hence, I will probably have to grab a lot of books for selling over at Faversham tomorrow to cover the journey and a few drinks.
The money tomorrow is from Retail Eyes and the other one I am expecting is Lodge (£52) which might not come in till Monday or Tuesday, so I am fretting a little bit as that damn electricity key meter will need feeding again.
At least the big one is on Wednesday which will just be in time for the Charley beer festival over the following weekend and to which I have been invited by Mike and Graeme to attend For that I do not mind slumming it in a sleeping bag.
Nothing is simple , especially on the bread line.
