Last night i watched on DVD the great Bert Stern's film documentary of the Newport Jazz Festival 1958, Jazz On A Summer's Day. This is perhaps one of the best films on jazz i have seen. Some great performances by Thelonious Monk, Anita O'Day, Chico Hamilton, Sonny Stitt, Gerry Mulligan, Dinah Washington and so on.

However, this morning i have found a clip on spring time by English composer, Frederick Delius , and the lovely gorgeous On Hearing The First Cuckoo In Spring.

The photographs are of places in and around the Derbyshire Peak District: places just outside include the villages of Kirk Ireton and Brassington.

Enjoy.

Sat Navs

There was an article about Sat Navs on the radio this morning and how people have lost the ability to orientate themselves, and that the technology is now in every smart phone. Well, firstly, i do not drive although i use to, and don't own a car. Secondly, i have always had a very good sense of direction, know how to use a map, and really cannot see why you need one unless you are in terrain short of markers, like the  dessert.

It is just another piece of technology  that  deadens the brain from thinking for itself.

This afternoon i was listening to the drama version of Raymond Chandler's hard boiled private eye Philip Marlowe   in the classic The Long Goodbye on BBC Radio 4 it was a really fascinating version and make me want to go back to the film version of it.

So i have might have to find the black and white film version of it assuming it is available on YouTube. if so, i shall download it, and link the clip on my blog here.

At one time in the past I use to enjoy these film noir movies of hard boiled detective stories and will have to look out for a collection of the Raymond Chandler novels.

Tonight of course it is the Eurovision song contest. My cousin will be watching it, but i won't, and will either listen to some proper music or watch a DVD.

After lunch, Florence , the cat , decided to sleep in the middle room and i took this picture of her. She must have known i was about to take it as she gave me a look of  "You thought i was asleep, didn't you?" .
