Another composer that The Wire magazine introduced me from a primerarticle on spectral music is Gerard Grisey. Here is his composition Partiels, played by Garth Knox and the Asko Ensemble.

Sounds spooky i know. Like a horror movie soundtrack.

Last night i had a four hour Buffy-fest from Season Five with Glory, The Key as a human girl , Dawn. Yes, Joss Wheedon was at the height of his creativity when this aired on our screens.

Did the usual chores and then finished off my report from yesterday. Time to listen to some music, and in particular that soul compilation.

So here is one of those tracks from the 70's, Ann Peebles and I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down.

What a tune, a real deep soul classic from Memphis.

And one from the sixties , also on the same comp is this track by The Impressions and It's All Right.

Right on brothers.

Enjoy.

Okay , now i am in that soulful groove, here are a couple more soul classics.

Mel and Tim - Backfield In Motion

A classic sixties groove from Stax Records and from the same label in the 70's this funky tune by The Staple Singers - Respect Yourself.

Enjoy.

Moving around the BBC iPlayer i found this great Desert Island Discs programme from Radio 4 with Elbow front man Guy Garvey. Plus i love Kirsty Young's seductive voice.

He is the bearded gorilla of the band, as Kirsty affectionately calls him. So here is a classic Elbow song Lippy Kids (Build A Rocket Boys).

Enjoy.

So what if Greece has a left wing government that wants to scrap the austerity programme. Perhaps the EU is a turning point? I dunno. What do you think?

Anyway, been a day of listening to music, some blues and that lovely soul compilation and now some lush orchestral music by John Barry , Music From The Motion Picture "Out of Africa" . He has made some wonderful film scores imcluding the early James Bond ones. This is one of his finest.

Track 6 - Karen;s Journey/Siwaye

Must try to watch this film again one day.

Enjoy.

Jean Rouaud "Fields Of Glory" (Harvill Press)

This slim volume catches the imagination with long descriptive passages about French life, 2CVs, rain, etc. Set in and around Nantes it unravels the history of a typically eccentric family. Gradually the younger members of the family become aware of what happened to the grandparents' generation during and after the First World War and how those events still hang over France. Told in a narrative flashback style, there is much comedy and much pathos. Well worth reading, if only for a marvelous picture of the French.

An exquisitely written and crafted gem by a great literary stylist. Understated and moving drama revealing the ongoing repercussions of the Great War. Exquisite.
