Joan Didion "The Year Of Magical Thinking" (Harper Perennial)
This was quite a tough read ,and not in its language, but in the raw emotions that is conveyed. A deeply personal record of the author's experience with the stages of grief. There are insights aplenty and detailed analysis of the writer's feelings and behaviour in the wake of her spouse's death and her only child's critical illness. The writing is elegant, but down to earth, melancholic and brave, and touches your heart. I felt a huge deep lump in my throat whilst reading this and yet it was so unputadownable I finished it in one go.
I recommend it but with just one caveat - be in a good frame of mind before you read it.
Well, that was a strange day. Having had my lunch in Spoons today I noticed John was in the same pub with some of his friends. He was the one who put up my curtains. Small world.
It took half an hour to find this place on Canterbury. Finally found it and done the covert shop and now doing the report.
Reason for the lateness?
Phil texted me that he was in Faversham this evening and perhaps we could meet after nine for a drinks . So that is what we did at my local Spoons pub.
